California's Levine Act requires local officials to check every vote against the campaign contributions they've received. Doing that by hand is slow and easy to get wrong. ForaCity does it automatically and flags conflicts before the meeting — not after the vote.

First, the law
The Levine Act says that if an official has accepted more than $500 in the past 12 months from someone seeking a permit, license, or contract from the agency, they must step aside from that decision. One missed contribution puts both the officer and the city at risk.
The fine is personal
Up to $5,000 per violation, issued to the officer as an individual — not to the agency. The city cannot pay it for them.
Enforcement comes from three directions
A violation can be pursued by the FPPC, prosecuted by the District Attorney or Attorney General, or brought as a civil action by any member of the public.
The decision itself is at risk
A vote cast while disqualified can be challenged and the decision voided — undoing a permit or contract the city and the applicant relied on, in public view.
